Getting Out During Quarantine

What a spring!

The most beautiful one in my memory. We may look back at spring of 2020 as that time we were all quarantined, but perhaps we also will remember that we had the opportunity to experience every moment of a new growing season.

Instead of being in classrooms and offices we’ve been in our homes, on the porches, and walking our neighborhoods. Most importantly, we’ve been in our yards.

You may not be able to go anywhere, but you can order mulch, plants, and stone and start that outdoor project that’s been on your to-do list for ages. Pop it to the top of that priority list and enjoy the prettiest season in Cincinnati!

Native plants thrive in an Our Land Organics landscape design and installation

Even if you don’t have a major project on the agenda, you can take smaller steps to freshen up for the new growing season:

  • Clean up all that winter junk! Clear leaves, perennials, and so on; throw them on the compost pile if you have one!

  • Weed. Everybody’s favorite job! Weeding is so much easier in the spring when soil is soft. You can also apply an organic pre-emergent for extended weed control.

  • Apply compost. Take advantage of that glorious compost from the winter and spread it over your beds for added nutrients and improved soil quality.

  • Mulch. Use locally sourced and appropriate products for the planting area. Most companies will deliver to your driveway and you can pay via phone or online. Edge the beds first for a clean look.

  • Prune as needed on shrubs and trees. Just make sure you prune only at the appropriate time for each plant. Do not prune those spring bloomers until right after they are done with their blooming show.

  • Connect those rain barrels for the season and get ready to benefit from each rainfall.

  • Plant! Figure out what you need and order a delivery of plants. Lots of local garden centers will gather what you need and have it ready for a non-contact pick up. You can also check out our native plant offerings at The Nursery at Our Land Organics!

Bottom line? Get out and do what you can during this time. As always, we’re just an email, a phone call, or a contact form away any time you need help with landscape design, installation, or maintenance. Your piece of earth is waiting to welcome you!
